Kuala Ibai folk keep vigil for sighting of ‘pontianak’
By R.S.N. MURALI
KUALA TERENGGANU: Dwelling on superstitious issues such as pontianaks will only set the people back and hamper the development of the state, said information and religion committee deputy chairman Muhammad Ramli Nuh.
Hitting out at certain people who claimed to have seen the female apparition in a village in Kuala Ibai recently, Muhammad said it only reflected the backward thinking of the people.
“When other parts of this region are moving towards achieving progress, these locals are wasting their precious resources on such a preposterous matter.
“Even if the pontianak really does exist, just ignore it and concentrate on spiritual development and enriching knowledge to keep pace with globalisation.
“Those spreading the sighting rumours have nothing better to do and they should enrol themselves in religious classes or carry out community works,” he said when asked to comment on the supposed sighting at Kampung Tok Adis here last week.
The villagers claimed that they stumbled upon the pontianak after carrying out a gotong-royong to clear some bushes at a cemetery last Monday.
Hehe.. just an illustration here :P
Those who claimed to have seen the ghost said it had long hair, sharp teeth and a pair of red eyes.
The purported sighting caused a fuss among the villagers and some were keeping vigil every night at the cemetery in the hope of catching a glimpse of the supernatural being.
According to Malay folklore, a pontianak is said to be the spirit of a woman who died during childbirth.
She is usually dressed in white with long black hair.
